Maltese Puppy Cut Info

A Maltese puppy cut might be in your pet’s best interest. The Maltese dog is a small and beautiful animal. His long fur is silky and requires constant attention. If you haven’t got as much time as you’d like to care for a long fur coat, then you may want to consider the Maltese puppy cut.

For being a hypoallergenic dog, the Maltese is on the top of the list. Folks with allergic reactions to dog fur may find the Maltese the perfect answer to their problems. The reason for this is that the Maltese has no undercoat. No undercoat means very little shedding. This is great news for allergy sufferers. But the flipside to this is that no undercoat means the fur mats very easily. A Maltese puppy cut may be your best solution to this problem.

Maltese fur grows long and should be brushed every day, if you do not opt for the Maltese puppy cut. A steel-toothed comb will help with the matting problem, but only if you use it regularly—at least every other day. Maltese dogs have a lot of energy and a zest for life, so they love to play and get into things. Getting dirty means nothing to them, but it’s going to mean a lot for you. A Maltese puppy cut will eliminate the need for constant brushing.

You DON'T want your Maltese puppy to look like this one:

While the Maltese puppy cut gives your cute little guy the look of always being a puppy, even when older, if you had always wanted your pet to look like one of the show dogs you see at the competitions, then get yourself prepared to do a lot of work. Long Maltese fur requires special shampoos and conditioners and even special styling treatments.

For instance, if, instead of a Maltese puppy cut, you opt for long fur, you will need to bathe your dog in a special shampoo made especially for white fur dogs. Do not use one of those bluing shampoos made for humans, unless you want a dog with a bluish tint to his fur!  An oatmeal-based shampoo is a good idea for sensitive skinned dogs.

And after the bath, a blow dryer and good combing will be necessary to gain that lovely silky look. The blow dryer, of course, should be set on low, as the Maltese has delicate skin. Leaving the fur to air dry will only result in a scraggly, unkempt looking dog. A Maltese puppy cut would be an infinitely better choice to this.

The Maltese puppy cut can be an all-over cut length of 1 to 2 inches, but there can also be a little leeway to this. Trimming bangs over the eyes, keeping the fur on the ears and legs a little longer than the body, can be ways to give your little charmer a short, but manageable style.

You can probably experiment with varying lengths of the Maltese puppy cut, yourself if you feel comfortable with shavers and scissors. But if the idea of giving your pet a Maltese puppy cut makes you nervous, then, by all means, find a professional dog groomer and discuss in depth with them what it is you want in your Maltese puppy cut.

  1. What a beautiful puppy! My puppy is a mix of Malteses and Shihtzu. What is the difference in the two cuts? I like a little more fluff around the face. Your thoughts? THX Suez

  2. Hi Suez,
I also like a little more fluff around the face so I leave the hair longer there. Same with his ears and "socks". What I trim the most is a top of his head because the hair is irritating to his eyes and also under his chin, so he doesn't look like he has a beard. This keeps his face cleaner after he eats as well. I hope this helps. Have fun with the cut. The hair grows back so don't worry if you don't like it the first time.

  5. I agree, this puppy is beautiful! I am only a kid though, and I may be getting a maltese puppy for my birthday. If anyone could answer this question, I'd be grateful: If I were to watch a groomer give my pup his first few cuts, would it be safe to do it myself at home if I could get him to lie down? I may be a kid, but I am very responsible and I think I could do this. If someone could answer my question that'd be great. Thank you!
