Taking Care Of Maltese Dog

Taking Care Of Maltese Dog

If you own, or are considering the adoption of a Maltese dog, then you are looking for the best pointer for taking care of Maltese dog, right? Well, you’ve come to the right place. The Maltese dog is one of the best dogs to have as pets as they are loving and eager to please. Even nicer is the fact that they high on the list of top hypoallergenic animals to have as pets. Since the Maltese has no undercoat, they do not shed, and this is a blessing for animal lovers who would like to have pets, but have allergies that would otherwise prevent adoption.

Since there is no undercoat, however, taking care of Maltese dogs does have a couple of small requirements. The fur, naturally long and silky on the Maltese, tends to mat and tangle quite easily. Thus, brushing on a regular basis will be required. Daily would be ideal, but at least every other day you should brush the Maltese coat.

Using shampoos especially designed for white fur is a good idea, too, especially if you want to brighten your pet’s coat and were thinking about using one of those bluing shampoos made for humans. They won’t work for your pet, unless, of course, your intention was to have a blue tint to your dog’s fur.

Taking care of Maltese fur also means not letting it air-dry after a bath. Now, for some folks, the disheveled, unkempt look of air-dried fur is not that big of an issue, so this tip is not required. But using a quality conditioner made for dog fur and towel drying, followed by a brushing is the way to go for a nice, silky smooth look to your pet’s fur. Of course, there’s also the use of a blow-dryer (set on medium, not high heat) to further style the long fur, but, again, for taking care of Maltese dog fur, this is not required, just nice.

One thing that a lot of people do, especially when they do not own a Maltese they intend for the show ring, is to cut the fur very short. Mats may still happen, so the bathing and brushing will still be necessary, but the job will not nearly be so onerous. On the plus side, a Maltese with short fur will always look like a puppy, no matter what age they are.

One last tip for taking care of Maltese dogs, toe nails must be trimmed regularly. If not, the blood vein inside will grow almost to the tip and when someone does finally cut the nails, the very real possibility of cutting into the quick and hurting the dog exists. If nail cutting starts to become an unpleasant experience for your pet, then you won’t be able to do it for long before your Maltese baby begins to fight you on it. Taking care of Maltese toes is required.
